The Rush is On!

After sending my daughter for her weekly tuition, I went to SS2 to do some shopping with my wife and son.

Before reaching the market proper, we were hijacked by a mobile van displaying Pensonic household goods. We were prompted to go up the van to have a look and they gave us a survey form to fill. They reward us by giving us a sample CD featuring snippets of songs from The Veronicas. The idea of a mobile display centre is actually novel but Pensonic goods have yet to make a name; since their after sales service continues to be bad.

The SS2 Sunday market has turned pretty busy. The rush is on; what with the Chinese New Year just around the corner. To top it all, The State assemblyman for the SS2 area, Lim Choon Kim has managed to secure temporary hawking licenses for the many illegal hawkers so that they can trade without harassment until the Chinese New Year. So the SS2 market has now more stalls to serve the needs of the buying crowd. I saw Choon Kim, relaxing in nearby MJ Restaurant overlooking the Sunday market. He is one smart alec, investing in the future of his political career. Kudos to him!

Yes, the ‘ugly’ enforcement officers from the Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya are around in full force in their blue uniforms. This time around, they were rakyat-friendly. They were quick to smile and in fact, some of them were busy shopping as well.

There were so many Chinese New Year paraphernalia on sale; from clothing to food to cooking utensils and the whole rigmarole. Customers were seen crowding the “ting-ting tang-tang” stalls to taste a myriad spread of cookies and biscuits and subsequently buying by the kilos. The man selling sweetmeats was doing roaring business and so was the guy selling ornamental jewelry.

The usual noise, din and dirt was still present at the wet market section. Chinese customers were busy buying mandarin oranges by the boxes, chickens by the half-dozens and huge chunks of pork. No, they did not miss the fish stalls – the Chinese must have fish for the Chinese New Year as they quote the age-old saying; “Nien Nien You Yee.” Pomfrets are the favourites. They also bought plenty of large prawns as well to store for the New Year. As usual, the Malay vegetable hawkers were screaming bargain prices at the top of their voices.

I guess the SS2 Sunday market will become busier as Chinese New Year approaches. The soya bean drink seller has finished selling his pails of fresh soya drink and has gone home by then. So, we could not buy any this time around. We bought what we wanted; fetched my daughter from her tuition and went home.
